The Faculty of Science and Technology conducted a field visit to deliver and provide knowledge on the breeding of silver-haired bee (Stingless Bee) to the Bang Nang Lee Community Enterprise Group in Samut Songkhram Province.

The Faculty of Science and Technology conducted a field visit on December 10-11, 2024, to deliver knowledge on breeding silver-haired bees (stingless bees) to the Bang Nang Lee Community Enterprise Group in Samut Songkhram Province. This activity was part of the project aimed at improving the quality of life and increasing income for local communities through science, technology, and innovation, in the fiscal year 2025.

The project team, led by Assistant Professor Sukultra Khamchoo, Assistant Professor Dr. Montharap Sutatham, Assistant Professor Dr. Rinrada Pattanyaiying, Assistant Professor Dr. Piyada Wongwiwat, Assistant Professor Dr. Narumon Boonman, Assistant Professor Sirirat Phakpaknam, and Ms. Panisara Nituthon, Head of Research and Academic Service Development, provided guidance on the benefits of stingless bee farming. The honey and pollen from stingless bees are more expensive than regular honey, making this an economically viable occupation. The bees collect nectar from flowers and plant pollen, such as coconut, lychee, longan, and mango, and they also help with pollination, boosting agricultural productivity.

The Faculty of Science and Technology chose to introduce the silver-haired bee species to the group as a starting point for breeding. They coordinated with the Bang Sak Kao Stingless Bee Community Enterprise Group in Chanthaburi Province, where Mr. Payut Chaisewana offered advice on bee farming and assisted in providing the silver-haired bee species as breeding stock. Additionally, beekeeping boxes were provided to the Bang Nang Lee Community Enterprise Group to prepare for future breeding efforts.

This activity aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • Goal 1: No Poverty, by promoting stingless bee farming as a means to generate income and reduce poverty in rural communities.
  • Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by supporting new livelihoods like bee farming, contributing to sustainable local economies and employment.
  • Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, by utilizing local natural resources efficiently, such as flowers and plant pollen, and promoting sustainable production.
  • Goal 15: Life on Land, as stingless bees play an important role in pollination, supporting biodiversity and ecological agriculture.

This project contributes to improving the quality of life for local communities through the application of science and technology while supporting sustainable development in economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The introduction of stingless bee farming creates an environmentally friendly and sustainable income source for the community.
